FOUND // Behind the Scenes!

There's no question that it takes a small army to make an event happen and the FOUND event was no exception! I couldn't have done it with out SO many people who took time out of their busy lives to come and help put the show together! Here's a few behind the scenes photos of the installation setup, which took two solid days of work to make happen! All in all, it was incredibly easy, thanks to all of the amazing artists, staff, friends and interns who rolled up their sleeves and created something beautiful![blogshow id=4f1c94f3e6969 player=0 autoplay=0 toolbar=0] Later this week, I'll have a full blog post with photos from the event! And special thanks to Louisa for some of these photos!

Stay tuned!

Published & Making History // Minnesota Bride

Ladies and Gentleman, I would like your attention. For months now, I’ve been dying to share with you the wedding of Alyson and Jesse. This wedding meant SO much to me, for so many reasons, but most importantly for the positive impact I hope it makes in our market and industry overall! Alyson and Jesse are my first LGBTQ+ couple and it was my extreme pleasure of photograph their wedding! It’s been a personal goal of mine to gain more LGBTQ+ couples, because I truly believe in gay rights, marriage and equality for all. When I met Alyson and Jesse, it was very clear that they were the perfect clients for me, and we really connected over the entire experience of their wedding! What is even more epic is that I feel like we’re making a big difference and taking part in a little bit of history, because the Newquist’s wedding is the

FIRST. EVER. LGBTQ+ WEDDING. EVER. PUBLISHED. IN. MINNESOTA!!!!!!

When I found this out, it really hit me how important this time is for our world and the incredible impact it will have on the wedding industry! I’m a person who is all about making a difference and to be a part of this movement is incredibly exciting to me. I feel honored to be a part of it. I’m also very proud that Minnesota Bride believed in this story enough to publish it, and the fact that this is all happening pre-leagalization in Minnesota is even MORE exciting!!!

Alyson and Jesse were two of the handiest and craftiest brides I’ve ever met! These two decided not only to have a DIY wedding, but they purchased 40 acres of land up in Finlayson, MN and opened a wedding venue, called Juliane James Place, for future couples to host their weddings and events at! I, myself, have used the space to photograph Tara LaTour’s newest collection and also to host the ELEVATE Workshop this past fall! The property is nothing short of gorgeous and I highly encourage you all to check it out! I will be doing a full blog post on Alyson & Jesse’s wedding in the next few weeks, but I wanted to share the news of this incredible feature in the newest issue of MN Bride, which is hitting the news stands as we speak! This feature means more to me, simply because of the issue at hand on LGBTQ+ marriage. I hope it does impact not only our city, but our industry and Midwest market overall! As a vendor, I’m incredibly proud and that is the best feeling in the world!

Welcome to the new Rivets and Roses!

I love big announcements! They’re just so much fun! As many of you know, a couple of years ago, I started another wedding photography company called Rivets and Roses. This brand started small, with only one photographer shooting under it at one time and coming into the 2012 season, it was very clear that it was the perfect time to take this to the next level! We’ve had phenomenal success with our photographers in the past and I had big plans for where this studio might go in the future!

When I look back at many of my notes/goals/thoughts from the past couple of years, I always had written down to “Focus on R&R and make that brand what you know it can be!” A few months ago, I was looking through all of those notes-to-myself and I suddenly felt this overwhelming feeling that now was the time to make that happen, we were ready.

So, for the first time ever, I really put it out there that I was hiring. I decided to hire on more photographers to make Rivets and Roses a legitimate, full functioning wedding photography studio for the city of Minneapolis. I wasn’t sure what kind of applicants we might get, but I knew exactly what I wanted in these new shooters. There was a high level of quality I was looking for, as well as passion and drive to be an amazing wedding photographer. Let me tell you that I was AH-MAZED by the people to sent in their applications! I met with many seriously talented people and had some solid conversations during the interviews and I am SO proud to announce the team we have put together for you!

Each of our new photographers has a very distinct style and personality that is very different from one another! Rivets and Roses is a wedding photography studio where couples are meant to come and browse around the website. It’s designed for potential brides and grooms to wander around and really find a photographer who inspires them, both thru their work and personality. The benefit of booking with R&R is simply the fact that it’s the sister company to my wedding brand, Photogen Inc. and the same quality of service and product will be given to every single one of our clients! We will most definitely take care of you!

So, go on! Take a peek! Browse through our super-cool site, and learn about all of our new shooters! Louisa, Leslie, Natalie, Marc and Desiree are all helping me host FOUND // The Art of Wedding event on Friday, January 20th! If you want to meet them, please stop on by and say hello! We would love to see you!

The new site allows you to view everyone’s portfolios in full screen mode! I just love this!

Take some time to read through everyone’s biography! There’s some pretty cool facts in here!

Cheers to a new venture and living the dream! This is a big, new, exciting chapter and I can’t wait to see where it goes!

Mr. and Mrs. Rich!!

Ben and Christina are one of those couples that makes your heart melt. Their love is simple, honest and pure and that is exactly what they revolved their wedding around. Their entire affair took place on an early Saturday afternoon at the Woods Chapel and the entire event was produced by their family and friends. This was a DIY-done-right wedding and I just love the way everything turned out - simply gorgeous!

Jenny & Aashish: An Indian Fusion Wedding!

I love culture and especially when it comes to weddings! It's fascinating for me to document a day that is so rich in tradition and Jenny & Aashish  totally tailored their wedding day to made it their own! Their ceremony was a fusion between Christian and Indian beliefs and practices, and to be perfectly honest, it was SO much fun! I mean, SO. MUCH. FUN. I personally love Indian ceremonies, specifically. There's so much color, dancing, bangles, the couple is showered in flowers, and a giant celebration from the entrance to the exit. Jenny and Aashish are a couple who were continually smiling, laughing and enjoying themselves throughout their entire day as well and it was so refreshing to see a couple truly enjoy every single moment of their day!

[blogshow id=4ed798c81d2a6 player=0 autoplay=0 toolbar=0]

Congratulations to Jenny & Aashish! The wedding celebrations are only beginning for these two! They will be having receptions in both New York and India in the coming weeks and we wish you THE best and hope you had as much fun as you did on the official big day!

Mr. and Mrs. Dolezal

Kelsey and Steve have a story exactly out of a movie. To set the scene, it's summer, at the lake house that is the perfect retreat for everyone. Family and friends have gathered to soak up some sunshine and of course - host a few bbq's along the way. The story goes that Steve somehow made it over to one of these shindigs and caught the eye of his future wife. (Here's the part where you sigh, wipe the tear from your face and fist-pump for love.)

Fast forward to September 24th, 2011. Once again, all of their friends and family are together for their wedding and it was one hell of a party! The entire day was absolutely perfect and a true celebration of families coming together. This wedding was one that I was personally looking forward to very much, simply because of the circumstances in which I met the bride. Kelsey was a big fan of our work here for a really long time and I still remember the phone call when she wanted to book! There was an instant connection between us and that is exactly the love you should feel when you book your photographer for your wedding day (seriously - future brides, take note!) Kelsey and Steve are one of our destination couples and so we got to know each other via e-mail and skype, but really didn't meet face-to-face until the day before their wedding. I love traveling for weddings, because we usually take the time to grab a cocktail with the wedding party, their family and friends, which I think, makes all the difference in the world for us on the big day!  Kelsey and Steve came 'back home' to get married, which was in good ole Des Moines, Iowa!

Congratulations to Kelsey and Steve on their amazing wedding! Thanks so much for inviting us down to be a part of your day!

Mr. and Mrs. Brooks // One Classy Affair!

Lane and Edward are the epitome of class and style. When it came to their wedding, it was absolutely nothing but stunning! The couple's ceremony took place on the Brook's private property and it was absolutely perfect. They finished off the night with their stunning reception at the Lafayette Club! One of the things I loved so much about Lane and Edward's wedding was how timeless everything was! Not only did they look flawless, but Lane wore her mother-in-law's veil, along with a head piece that has been passed down from generations on her mother's side! The couple also wrote their own vows and they were absolutely beautiful!I have so many good things to say about this couple, their day, their family and friends, but I'll let the pictures speak for themselves...

Congratulations to Lane and Edward on your amazing wedding! It was such a great honor photographing your day, thank you for that!

Meet the Team // Jonny: Assistant

Jonny Edwin Bennett. With a name like that, how was I not suppose to hire the guy? Seriously though, Jonny is the epitome of style. Long before he even came in for his interview, Brandon, said to me, " I don't care what you think of him, we're hiring that guy." Lucky for all of us, Jonny's personality was just as cool as his style and swagger - yes Jonny, you have swagger!

As an artist, Jonny gives a unique perspectives on weddings! He is a photographer who has a lot of tricks up his sleeve and he busts them out when I least expect it! His fine-art-perspective most definitely has an influence in his work and he is also a person who is growing exponentially! We are SO lucky to have Jonny as a part of our team - and you can never have too much swagger!

Q. What is your role in the Photogen Inc. Crew?

My roll in the Photogen Inc. crew is to pretty much be another set of eyes and a helping hand. I get the opportunity to spend the day being as creative as possible and looking for the best possible shot. I usually try to come up with a game plan ahead of time, but that always doesn't work, so you are forced to really be on your toes at all times, which can make things exciting!

Q. How did you begin working for Photogen Inc.?

I was introduced to Eliesa through Tom, another second shooter. I ended up sending her a link to some of my work and was asked to come in for an interview. Bing Bang Boom - I was officially part of the crew! (Plus, I met my girlfriend by taking this job...BONUS!)

Q. What does it mean to be an assistant?

I get to do the things that need to get done. Some of the behind the scenes work, as well as shooting. While the lead shooter might be out with the wedding party, I'll spend that time shooting details, and candids at the cocktail hour.  I might also be doing to digital tech work. Most of the time, I'm getting different perspectives and scoping out different locations.

Q. How has being a part of this crew helped you as an artist? It has helped me immensely. Being able to shoot with other photographers and see how everybody else works gives you a different perspective on things.

Q. What is your favorite part about shooting?

I love being able to capture a moment that the couple didn't see during the day. I love spending my time shooting things that usually go unseen.

Q. What else do you love in life, besides photography?

When I'm not behind the camera, I spend most of my time on one of my bikes or trying out a new recipe in the kitchen. I have a fascination with documentaries (about absolutely nothing), WWII History, Kung Fu movies from the 70's, anything on the History/Discovery channel, and backpacking.

Q. How did you start out being a photographer?

I definitely got the photo bug from my dad. He always pulled out his older film cameras and showed me how they worked. He let me shoot a concert with one of his old 35mm Nikons and I, of course, had no clue what I was doing. Everything came out over-exposed. I still thought I was pretty awesome, though!

Q. What do you think you bring to this team?

I like to think I bring a different style than everybody else. I am definitely inspired by photographers that hover more on the fine art side of things, than just portrait photographers. Everybody on the crew has a unique style and a different way of looking at things. All of us could shoot the same centerpieces at a wedding, but everyone's images would come out different.

Q. What are you looking forward to the most for the 2011 season?

This year I am looking forward to spending more time developing my own style. It has been a huge blessing to be able to network and learn from like-minded people.

Mr. and Mrs. Mundahl!!

Betsy and Josh are one super fun couple who walk-to-the-beat-of-their-own-drum! The story was told on their wedding day of how they had courted for 9 years and were engaged for 9 weeks! That's right, these two planned their entire wedding in a couple of short months and it was absolutely perfect! Betsy and Josh were married in the groom's family's back yard and is was absolutely lovely! The bride wore a stunning Oscar de la Renta dress, that was fit for a ballerina - which is exactly Betsy's number one passion in life! And, to bring their reception to life at Spill the Wine, the oh-so-fabulous Kirsten from Fab Event Design came in and worked her magic!

At the end of the day, we had one gorgeous couple, surrounded by their closest family and friends, drinking good wine, eating amazing food and dancing the night away. It was a perfect wedding!

Congratulations to Betsy and Josh for being one amazing couple!

Cheers to you!

Meet the Team // Jacob: Assistant

Blog readers, it is my extreme pleasure to introduce you to one of our super-star-assistants, Jacob!Jacob is one of the newer additions to our team in the past year and I am SO happy he is a part of our crew! He is one of those people who is solid. He always has your back, and as an assistant, he is always one step ahead of me. Jacob is the person who is keeping track of the gear, has the lights ready when I need them and makes sure that we have everything on-hand at the perfect time! He has also been so much fun to watch grow! He pushes the limits, brings along fun film cameras and I have really seen a giant improvement in his work! Jacob, we absolutely adore you and you are such a huge part of our crew, thank you so much for all of your hard work and everything you bring to our team! Q. What is your role in the Photogen Inc. Crew?

Assistant Extraordinaire.

Q. How did you begin working for Photogen Inc?

Initially everything spurred from an e-mail I sent to Eliesa.  I was on an airplane at the time, and they had free wi-fi on the flight, which was pretty amazing, and I was inspired to send out epic emails.

Q. What does it mean to be an assistant?

It depends on which photographer you're working for.  For each one, being an assistant means something different.  Sometimes your responsibility is just setting up the tripod after the ceremony and taking a few photos here and there.  On the other end, it's shooting the majority of a wedding because your boss is the maid of honor ;)

Q. How has being a part of this crew helped you as an artist?

It has really helped me stay inspired.  I look at my cohort's work on a pretty consistent basis to see what they've been shooting, how their style is evolving and what their subject matter is.

Q. What is your favorite part about shooting?

Oh man.  Everything.  I think my favorite part is the relationship with the subject.  Connecting with people and taking their photo can be a pretty deep experience.  I kind of over analyze though.

Q. What else do you love in life, besides photography?

Music has been a passion of mine for a long time.  I've been going to shows constantly since I had my driver's permit, and traveled across the country just to see my favorite musicians play.  I really like to read business books.  Television and movies are something that really get me going.  Someday I'd love to experiment with video projects.  I love really dry humor.  Another important aspect of my life is my faith. Love me some Jesus.  Also, Chipotle.  These are in no particular order. Q. How did you start out being a photographer?

In high school I thought it was absolutely ridiculous that people wanted to be photographers, as a profession.  Those were my friends who would just take photos of flowers and post them on their Myspace photography page.  I'm aging myself here. Anyway, I was working at Circuit City and Nikon had a really awesome ad for the D40 they were just releasing and on a whim I purchased one.  From there I started shooting some of the shows I went to.  Then I moved to Milwaukee to pursue a career in photo assisting, hung out there for a year & worked my butt off, and a year later I came back to Minnesota.  Now I work with Eliesa at Photogen-inc and intern at a commercial photography studio.

Q. What do you think you bring to this team?

I'd say the most tangible thing I bring to the table is the willingness to learn.  I'm always up for experimenting and learning new things.

Q. What are you looking forward to the most for the 2011 season? Honing my skill set is definitely my goal for this season.  I want to take photographs that will help the couple at hand re-live their wedding day and make others stop and say "holy crap."

Mr. and Mrs. Stewart!

At Ashley and Justin's reception, the father-of-the-bride was giving a speech and he said some simple words that completely sum up this couple for me. He said, "You know, Justin, you are exactly everything that Ashley has ever wanted in a man and Ashley, you have found everything you were looking for." Those words might seem like a no-brainer to some, when it comes to getting married, but that is truly what this is all about, and why I photograph weddings. It is such a true pleasure to document the moment that a couple decides to become husband-and-wife. And it is an even more amazing opportunity to be able to capture a time in a couple's life where they have truly found each other. Cheezy, I know, but it's the honest truth! Ashley and Justin have such a passion for one another, but it's clear that their family and friends are their biggest fans. I decided to focus a little more on the portraits for this post, rather than their details, because to me, it was absolutely the people in that room that made their day as beautiful as it was!

Congratulations to Ashley & Justin on getting hitched!

Colorado has always been inspiring to me! The fresh air, the mountains, the people and the lifestyle - it's just all so fantastic! Last season, I had the pleasure of photographing Sheri & David's wedding in Aspen, Colorado and I fell in love with that state even more! It was double-the-fun, because my friend Ajit was able to shoot with me on this wedding and it's a treat for us to see each other! Apparently we weren't the only ones who fell in love with the images from this wedding! Luxe Mountain Weddings, which is a division of Colorado Weddings Magazine, blogged all about Sheri, David and their amazing day!

Meet the Team // Ryan: Assistant

World, meet Ryan! Ryan is one of our assistants and might also be known as the 'dark child'. (Can you tell by his self portrait?) However, for all of us who truly know him, he is a giant softy. We absolutely love Ryan for his sarcastic sense of humor, witty remarks and ironing skills - seriously, I can't tell you how many groomsman clothes he has ironed before a wedding! As a photographer, Ryan is a quiet surprise. He has the ability to hone in on a moment and absolutely nail it. These are always images that are print-competition-worthy and make me so proud to see him produce! Ryan - we love you and you are a giant part of this team! If you all see him on the streets, just don't talk about politics or religion - you'll be there for hours!

Q. What is your role in the Photogen Inc. Crew?To give aid and support to the lead Photographer.

Q. How did you begin working for Photogen Inc?

I stumbled in very early on when Photogen was a fledgling company and a pulse was just as important as skill. I had absolutely no experience shooting in a formal environment and all I had shot with was Canon Rebel XTI so I had to borrow a camera.

Q. What does it mean to be an assistant?

I do the things that need to be done throughout the day that the lead doesn't have the time to do. Mostly though, I am another perspective. I have more freedom to shoot the things that may otherwise go unnoticed.

Q. How has being a part of this crew helped you as an artist?

By being part of the crew I have become more competent with the tools we use. It's one thing to read about all the cool gadgets but getting to play with them everyday is much more interesting.

Q. What is your favorite part about shooting?

My favorite part about shooting is the camera can occasionally  be a pass to get you into places that are otherwise off limits. I have always been intrigued by those places marked "Employees Only" or "Authorized Personnel Only".  People tend to think you are permitted to be there when you have a giant camera and an even larger lens.  Those tucked away spaces typically have a much more interesting aesthetic.

Q. What else do you love in life, besides photography?

I have a four year old that could run circles around most kids her age. Foreign and domestic policy discussions. Books so big they exist in their own gravity well. A fine IPA. Cheese. Cereal. Dr. Who. And the fact that GRRM finished the damn book!

Q. How did you start out being a photographer?

I started out by taking a class in collage and discovering I really enjoyed it. And then I had a kid and all new parents fancy themselves photographers.

Q. What do you think you bring to this team?

I bring a love and appreciation to the art as well as a wicked impression of Brian Johnson of AC/DC Fame.

Q. What are you looking forward to the most for the 2011 season?

I look forward to seeing everyone's work and learning from it.

Safa and Shakir: Married!

I love culture, especially when it comes to a wedding. There are simply SO many ceremonial traditions when it comes to a marriage and I love to experience them along with our clients. Safa and Shakir came to me and booked on the spot (LOVE when that happens, by the way!) Clearly, they were the perfect clients for me and as the began to describe their big day, I fell more in love. This is a couple that values their culture, tradition and family way before any of the fluff. Safa's family is from Egypt and Shakir's family is from Pakistan, so their legal marriage took place in a private family ceremony, several weeks ago. Photographing their reception is where I come in; however, there were still some key rituals that took place. My favorite part of the day was the Zaffa, or wedding march. This is very typical in all Arabic cultures and it is a PARTY! The colors, sights, sounds and energy are unlike anything else - there's loud music, chanting, clapping, dancing, and it ultimately embraces the true celebration of the marriage!

Safa and Shakir chose the Calhoun Beach Club for their reception site and everything came out absolutely beautifully! The women looked absolutely stunning with help from Safa's sister, Marwa, who's a makeup-guru and Julie of Smart & Chic Bride did a lovely job on all the hair (Side note - they just won best-of-makeup for Minnesota Bride - congrats ladies!)

The bottom line is that Safa and Shakir's day was filled with tons of tradition, beauty and celebration that was SO much fun to be a part of!

Photogen Inc. Featured on Grace Ormonde!

A little over a year ago, I photographed a wedding in Santiago De Compostela, Spain. It was pure magic. From the couple to the setting to the culture, I realized that I was totally and completely in my element and I was meant to photograph weddings of this caliber! (You can view Part 1 and Part 2 of their blog post here!) A HUGE goal/dream of mine is to be published in Grace Ormonde magazine and I simply felt it in my bones that Tara and Jorge's wedding just might have what it took to get in their publication! Well, I didn't make it to print, but their wedding DID receive an OH-SO-FABULOUS feature on their blog!! The magazine did a fantastic job interviewing the couple and put up a stellar slideshow of images from their day! I am honestly so, so, so honored to be featured by them, in whatever way that may be!
